Try this first
If only the toilet is affected, these steps often clear a blocked toilet without a plumber.
Stop flushing
Each flush adds more water to a bowl that can't empty. If it's rising, lift the cistern lid and close the flap at the bottom.
Use a flange plunger
A plunger with a rubber sleeve that fits the toilet outlet works far better than a flat sink plunger. Push gently first, then firm strokes.
Check other drains
Run the shower and basin. If they're slow or gurgling too, the blockage is in the main line and plunging won't reach it.
Look at the gully outside
If the overflow relief gully is spilling, call a plumber now and stop using water.
Call a plumber if
- Plunging hasn't worked after a few tries
- Other fixtures are slow or gurgling too
- The toilet blocks again within days
- Something solid has been flushed, like a toy or nappy
- Water is leaking around the base of the pan
- It's your only toilet
Renting? A blocked toilet is an emergency repair
Under Queensland tenancy rules, a blocked or broken toilet is listed as an emergency repair. Contact the emergency contact in your tenancy agreement first.
If you can't reach them in a reasonable time, you can arrange the repair yourself, up to four weeks' rent, then give the owner or manager the receipt and ask to be reimbursed in writing.
What does it cost?

Common questions
Why does my toilet keep blocking?
Repeated blockages usually mean something in the pipe catches waste: tree roots at a joint, a sag, or a build-up of wipes. A CCTV inspection shows which.
Are flushable wipes OK?
They don't break down like toilet paper and are one of the most common causes of blocked toilets and sewers. The City of Gold Coast won't reimburse blockages caused by wipes.
Should I use drain cleaner in a toilet?
No. On a full blockage it sits in the bowl and pipe, can damage older pipework and makes the job hazardous for the plumber.
