What to do while you wait

These steps stop the damage spreading until the plumber arrives.

  1. Stop using water

No flushing, showers, dishwasher or washing machine. Every litre has nowhere to go but up.

  2. Check the overflow relief gully

It's the round grate in the ground outside, usually near the bathroom or laundry. If it's spilling or its cap has lifted, the blockage is in the main sewer line.

  3. Protect people and floors

Keep kids and pets away, move rugs and anything stored on the floor, and wash your hands after touching anything sewage reached.

  4. Skip chemical drain cleaners

On a full blockage they sit in the pipe and make the job dangerous for the plumber.

  5. Renting? Tell your emergency contact

Call the emergency contact in your tenancy agreement as well, so the cost is sorted out properly.

Calling an emergency plumber after hours

Your call goes to a licensed emergency plumber who covers the Gold Coast. They ask where you are and what's happening, tell you what the visit will cost, and give you an arrival time.

Evenings, weekends and public holidays usually carry a higher call-out rate. Ask for the price before the plumber sets out, so there are no surprises.

On urgent jobs the first goal is getting the drain flowing again. If the camera shows a broken or root-filled pipe, the plumber clears it now and quotes the permanent repair separately, so you're not pressured into a big job at midnight.

Who pays for an urgent blocked drain?

Homeowners
Pipes on your side of the property connection are your responsibility. If the blockage turns out to be in the City of Gold Coast sewer main, the plumber reports it on 1300 000 928 the same day and the City may reimburse up to $300 including GST.
Tenants
A blocked or broken toilet is an emergency repair under Queensland tenancy rules. If you can't reach the emergency contact in reasonable time, you can arrange the repair yourself, up to four weeks' rent, and ask to be reimbursed in writing.
Units and townhouses
Drains shared with other lots are often common property. Call your body corporate manager as well as the plumber.
Businesses
Grease arrestors and trade waste pipes are the business's responsibility. See commercial plumbing.

Common questions

Is there a 24 hour plumber on the Gold Coast?

Some plumbers take calls around the clock, but availability late at night varies. When you call after hours, you'll know straight away whether a plumber can attend tonight and what it will cost, so you can decide.

Can a plumber come tonight?

Tell us what's happening when you call. If a plumber can attend after hours, they'll tell you the arrival time and the after-hours price before setting out. If not, you'll know straight away so you can make other arrangements.

How much does an emergency call-out cost?

A standard blocked drain clear is usually $150 to $500, based on 2026 Australian price guides. Night, weekend and public holiday call-outs usually cost more. The plumber confirms the price before the visit.

Is a blocked toilet an emergency?

For tenants in Queensland, yes: a blocked or broken toilet is listed as an emergency repair. For homeowners it's urgent if it's your only toilet or sewage is coming back up.

Should I turn the water off at the meter?

Only if water is still flowing in, for example from a burst pipe or a cistern that won't stop filling. For a blockage, it's enough to stop using taps, showers and toilets.
