Sewage coming up? Do this first

These steps stop the damage spreading while the plumber is on the way.

  1. Stop using water

No flushing, showers, dishwasher or washing machine. Every litre has nowhere to go but up.

  2. Check the overflow relief gully

It's the round grate in the ground outside, usually near the bathroom or laundry. If it's spilling or the cap has lifted, the blockage is in the main sewer line, not one fixture.

  3. Keep kids and pets away

Sewage carries bacteria. Wash your hands after touching anything it reached.

  4. Skip chemical drain cleaners

On a full blockage they sit in the pipe and make the job dangerous for the plumber.

  5. Call with your suburb and what's happening

Renting? Tell your property manager or emergency contact too.

How it works

One call, one plumber, and you agree the price before anything is done.

  1. 1

    Call or request a callback

Tell us your suburb and what's blocked. It takes under a minute.

  2. 2

    A local plumber calls you

They ask a few questions, confirm the price and tell you when they can be there.

  3. 3

    Found, cleared and checked

Most drains clear with a jetter or eel. If it keeps coming back, a CCTV camera shows why before any bigger repair is quoted.

What does it cost?

Typical Australian prices for 2026. Your plumber gives you a firm price for your job before starting.

JobUsual rangeTypical
Standard blocked drain clear$150–$500$320
CCTV inspection with high-pressure jetting$350–$1,100$700
Patch reline, one damaged section$300–$1,000per patch
Full pipe reliningper metre$2,000+ first metre

Ranges from 2026 Australian price guides by What's The Damage and Oneflare. After-hours and weekend call-outs can cost more. If the blockage is in the City's sewer main, see who pays.

What changes the price

Where the blockage is
A toilet trap is quicker than a sewer line under the driveway.
Access
An inspection opening makes the job faster. Older homes without one can take longer.
What caused it
Wipes and fat usually clear in one visit. Tree roots or a broken pipe may need CCTV and repair.
Time of day
Nights, weekends and public holidays usually carry a higher call-out rate.

Signs of a blocked drain, and what causes them

Signs to watch for

  • Toilet water rising or draining slowly after a flush
  • Gurgling from the toilet, shower or floor drain
  • Sink, shower and toilet slow at the same time, which points to the main line
  • A sewage smell inside or around outdoor drains
  • Wet patches or water around the overflow relief gully

Common causes on the Gold Coast

Tree roots
Roots push into the joints of older clay and earthenware sewer pipes, common in established suburbs.
Wet wipes, fat and sanitary items
They don't break down, even when the packet says flushable.
Storm debris
Heavy summer rain washes leaves, soil and sand into stormwater pits and downpipes.
Ageing or shifted pipes
Sags and cracks form where waste builds up.

Clear it, inspect it, or reline it?

Most blockages only need clearing. Relining is for damaged pipes, and a CCTV camera shows which one you have before you spend money. Read more about drain cleaning, CCTV inspections and pipe relining.

If the blockage is in the City's sewer

Your plumber checks your private drain first, usually with CCTV. If the blockage is in the City of Gold Coast sewer main, the plumber reports it on 1300 000 928 the same day. The City may then reimburse the cost, usually capped at $300 including GST.

Wet wipes and drains that don't meet the plumbing code aren't covered.

If you're renting

A blocked or broken toilet is an emergency repair under Queensland tenancy rules. Call the emergency contact in your agreement first. If you can't reach them in reasonable time, you can arrange the repair yourself, up to four weeks' rent, and ask to be reimbursed in writing.

Other blocked drains are routine repairs. Report them to your property manager.

Who you're dealing with

Gold Coast Drain & Pipe is a local referral service. We don't do the plumbing ourselves. We pass your job to one independent, licensed Gold Coast plumber, rather than sending your details to several companies at once.

  • A licence you can check

Plumbing work in Queensland needs a QBCC licence. Ask your plumber for their number and look it up on the QBCC licence register.

  • Price before work

The plumber tells you what the job will cost before starting. If they find a bigger problem, they explain it and quote it separately.

  • One phone call

No bidding war and no flood of calls from strangers. One local plumber gets your job and calls you back.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to clear a blocked drain on the Gold Coast?

Most standard blocked drains cost between $150 and $500 to clear, with around $320 typical, based on 2026 Australian price guides. A CCTV camera inspection with high-pressure jetting usually runs $350 to $1,100. The plumber confirms the price with you before starting, and after-hours call-outs can cost more.

Can a plumber come out today?

We pass your job to a local plumber as soon as you call or send the form. Same-day visits depend on how busy they are, so tell us if sewage is coming up inside or the overflow gully is spilling. Those jobs go first.

Is the blockage my responsibility or the council's?

The City of Gold Coast looks after the sewer from the main to your property connection, or one metre inside your boundary if the connection can't be found. Pipes on your side are the owner's responsibility. If the plumber finds the blockage is in the City's main, they report it on 1300 000 928 the same day and the City may reimburse up to $300 including GST.

I'm renting. Who pays for a blocked drain?

In Queensland a blocked or broken toilet is an emergency repair. Contact the emergency contact in your tenancy agreement first. If you can't reach them in reasonable time, you can arrange the repair yourself up to four weeks' rent and ask for reimbursement in writing. Other blocked drains are routine repairs to report to your property manager.

Do I need pipe relining?

Only if a CCTV inspection shows the pipe itself is cracked, broken or full of tree roots that keep coming back. Relining puts a new liner inside the old pipe, so there's usually no need to dig up your yard, driveway or garden.

Should I pour drain cleaner down a blocked drain?

Not when the drain is fully blocked. The chemical sits in the pipe, can damage older pipework and makes the job hazardous for the plumber. A plunger or hot (not boiling) water is safer for a slow sink or shower.

Who actually does the work?

Gold Coast Drain & Pipe is a referral service. An independent, licensed Gold Coast plumber does the work and agrees the price with you directly. You can check any plumber's licence on the QBCC licence register.
