When relining is the right fix
Most blocked drains only need clearing. Relining is for pipes that are physically damaged: cracked joints that let roots in, breaks in old clay or earthenware pipe, or a section that keeps catching waste no matter how often it's jetted.
A resin-soaked liner is pushed into the damaged pipe and hardened in place. Once it cures, it forms a smooth, jointless pipe inside the old one, so roots have nowhere to get in.
Relining isn't the answer for every pipe. If a section has fully collapsed or sagged badly, the plumber may need to dig up and replace that part. A CCTV inspection shows which you have before you spend money.
How pipe relining works
The order is the same whether it's a short patch or the full line.
CCTV inspection
A camera goes down the pipe to find the damage, measure its length and check the pipe hasn't collapsed. You can ask to see the footage.
Clear and clean the pipe
Roots and build-up are cut out with a root cutter or high-pressure jetter so the liner sits against clean pipe wall.
Install the liner
A resin-soaked liner goes in through an existing access point, such as the inspection opening, and is pressed against the old pipe.
Cure and reopen
The resin hardens to form the new pipe. Any branch connections are reopened with a cutter.
Final camera check
A second CCTV run confirms the liner is in place and the drain flows freely.
Patch, full reline or dig and replace?
The camera footage decides. Here's how the three options compare.
Patch reline
A short liner over one cracked joint or root entry point. The cheapest option when the rest of the pipe is sound.
Full-length reline
A continuous liner from one access point to another. Suits long runs of old clay pipe with several problem joints.
Dig and replace
Needed when a section has collapsed or sagged so badly that a liner can't follow it. Often combined with relining the rest.
What does pipe relining cost?
Relining is priced after a CCTV inspection, because the length and pipe size set the cost.
| Job | Usual range | Typical |
|---|---|---|
| CCTV inspection with high-pressure jetting | $350–$1,100 | $700 |
| Patch reline, one damaged section | $300–$1,000 | per patch |
| Sewer relining, priced per metre | $2,000+ | first metre, then ~$550/m |
| Long-term relining of a full line | $4,000–$20,000 | whole line |

Before you agree to relining
Five things worth asking, so you're comparing like with like.
- Can I see the CCTV footage?
- A good quote points to the damage on the footage and says how many metres need lining.
- Is the liner WaterMark certified?
- Relining products used on Australian drains need WaterMark certification. Ask which product will be used.
- Is the plumber QBCC licensed?
- Drain repairs are regulated plumbing work in Queensland. Ask for the licence number and check it on the QBCC register.
- What's the warranty, in writing?
- Ask what the warranty covers, for how long, and whether it's on the liner, the labour or both.
- Is the pipe sound enough to reline?
- Collapsed or badly sagged sections need replacing. The plumber should say so before quoting a reline.
Common questions
Is pipe relining worth it?
It is when roots or cracks keep blocking the same pipe. Clearing the drain again and again costs money each time, while a liner seals the damage. If the blockage was a one-off from wipes or fat, clearing it is usually enough.
How long does relining last?
Liner manufacturers commonly quote a design life of around 30 to 50 years. How long yours lasts depends on the product, how well it was installed and what goes down the drain.
Do you have to dig up my yard?
Usually not. The liner goes in through an existing inspection opening or access point. Digging is only needed if a section has collapsed or sagged too far for a liner to follow.
Will the council pay for relining?
Not for pipes on your side of the property connection. The City of Gold Coast looks after the sewer from the main to the property connection, and owners look after the rest.
How long does the job take?
Many relining jobs are finished in a day, including the camera checks before and after. Long runs or several sections can take longer.
